This game mode is called “Save the World” and is currently in paid-early access, but it’s planned to be released for free at some point in 2019. Fortnite was released in 2017, and with it, its creators also released a free-to-play game mode called “Battle Royale”.

Since this game mode was free, it quickly gained a huge following and the game became very popular in no time. Within its first year released the game acquired more than 125 million players worldwide.

The game is available on Windows, macOS, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and even iOS and Android. The game supports microtransactions which allows its players to purchase cosmetic items, and a “Battle Pass” which will make leveling up your account quicker and also reward you with bonus cosmetics and emotes each time you level up.

No cosmetics in the game have any effect on gameplay, so the microtransactions are mostly for people who want to level up quicker, or look unique.

In the “Battle Royale” mode, up to 100 players are airdropped onto an island where they must scavenge for weapons and equipment. Every player starts off without any weapons, with only a pickaxe at their disposal. With the pickaxe, players can tear down buildings and other objects to gather up building resources.

These resources can then be used to build new walls, ramps, roofs and such to build new structures. This allows players to quickly protect themselves from incoming attacks, build ramps to reach places otherwise not accessible or even trap other players.

The end goal of the game is to be the last one surviving as in any other battle royales, but the possibility to build new structures freely is what makes fortnite unique.

2. How to Play

Fortnite’s battle royale mode can be played either in Solo, Duo, or Squad, and at the beginning of the game all players are airdropped onto the island with a “Battle bus” that crosses the entire map. When parachuting out of the bus, it’s important to have a landing location decided so you don’t land in the middle of nowhere.

The reason for this is that it’s very vital in the early game to scavenge and loot for equipment that mainly can be found inside buildings, or chests that are placed randomly in the world. These chests mostly spawns inside buildings, or near other compounds.

Since building structures is very vital for your survival and control in player-versus-player encounters, it’s very important that you also focus on grinding resources by tearing down existing buildings and structures with your pickaxe. There’s three different kinds of resources: Wood, Stone, and Metal.

With wood being the weakest and metal the strongest. The type of resource used to build your structures defines how much damage from enemy bullets or gadgets it can withstand before breaking.

During the course of the game, the playable area will decrease as an incoming storm makes the map smaller over time. It’s very important to have some awareness of where the playable area is at all times, since being outside in the storm will inflict damage over time on players. If you find yourself being far from the playable circle, there’s plenty of options to get there quickly apart from running.

Scattered over the map, you can find different vehicles and equipment that will make traveling the map easier for you. For example, you can find ATVs to drive freely, or balloons that will make you float longer while jumping and you can even find “rift portals” that throw you up in the air and let you parachute to your desired locations.

Epic Games constantly updates the game with new locations, vehicles and equipment, so to get a better grip of what’s currently in the game we would recommend playing it for yourself.

Later in the game. the playable area will become really small and player-versus-player encounters will definitely happen at this stage. In the endgame you can expect a lot of players building big structures, often reaching high up the sky to make sure they have control of the highgrounds.

As in every shooter game, having control of the highground always gives you an advantage, and Fortnite is no different. Building structures like this and also making use of the building tool to protect yourself from incoming damage, it’s become the main aim of the game to build fast and efficiently.

This is often where very skilled players are different from the rest, since they easily can outbuild other players and quickly control the encounter.

Regarding weapons, there’s a heap of different types of weapons you can find in the world, and they all have different levels of rarity that defines their power and quality.

The rarity is defined by a colour, with gray being the lowest quality, followed by green, blue, purple and finally orange being the legendary rarity with the highest power. The different types of weapons consists of Assault rifles, shotguns, SMGs, Sniper rifles, Rocket launchers and more.

To use your weapons you also need to loot for ammunition which is scattered all over the map. There’s different types of ammunition for all the different types of weapons, so make sure to keep an eye out for the correct type for your currently equipped arsenal. In addition to finding weapons you can also find grenades, healing items and traps.

Healing items in particular can really turn the tables in a fight, so make sure that you are stacked up on some healing items for the late game.

3. How to Watch

Since its release in 2017, Fortnite have just kept growing bigger and bigger and is today considered a cultural phenomenon. When it was released it instantly became very big on Twitch, and streamers such as “Ninja”, “TSM_Myth” and “TimTheTatman” definitely helped popularize the game.

The game has also spawned a heap of different tournaments all over the world, with one of the first being held in Los Angeles at the huge gaming convention Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in 2018. Since then, there’s been a lot of tournaments and events for the game with big prize-pools and a huge viewership.

For 2019, Epic Games have announced the official Fortnite World Cup. The qualifying rounds for the world cup started in April, with the finals being held in New York on July 26th. Epic Games have put away an impressive US$30 million prize-pool for the cup, with the winner going home with the huge prize of US$3 million.

This prize-pool will be the biggest one ever, even beating the pool for The International 2018 Dota 2 event. If you want to watch the game being played you can check out the Twitch channels for some of the more famous players, which you can find below.

B. A Beginner’s Guide to Fortnite: How to win

I. Guide for beginner at Fortnite

Fortnite distinguishes itself with cartoon-style graphics and unique construction mechanics, but the premise is familiar. Your goal is to be the last person, squad, or team left alive in a round. That’s easier said than done, of course, since each match includes 99 other players, all of whom have the same goal.

Although the four-person Squad or 50 vs. 50 team modes can dramatically reduce the number of enemy combatants, you still compete indirectly with your teammates to get the best score.

The best way to improve your Fortnite performance is to dive into the game for a few hours and get first-hand experience. Fortnite is more accessible than Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG), and you are likely to fare better without as much experience.

Still, there’s no harm in familiarizing yourself with some basic mechanics and strategies beforehand. Although we can’t guarantee these tips will propel you to a first-place finish, following them will improve your chances. Luck, after all, determines many of the outcomes in these types of games.

1. Check Fortnite’s System Requirements

Fortnite is available on a wide range of platforms, but you need to make sure all your devices meet the minimum requirements if you plan to play everywhere. Check out the requirements below for each platform.

– PC and Mac Requirements for Fortnite:

For PCs and Macs, Epic Games requires at least an Intel HD 4000 or Iris Pro 5200 GPU, a Core i3 2.4GHz CPU, and 4GB of RAM. The recommended specs demand more powerful hardware: a Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 or AMD Radeon HD 7870 equivalent DX11 GPU with 2GB VRAM, a Core i5 2.8GHz CPU, and 8GB of RAM.

Fortnite also requires your machine to run at least the Windows 7 or macOS X Sierra (10.12.6) operating systems. Note that your macOS device must also support the Metal API.

For reference, Fortnite takes up about 20GB of disk space. I tested Fortnite on my Dell Inspiron 5675 gaming PC running Windows 10. My system features a Ryzen 1700X CPU, Radeon 580 8GB GPU, and 32GB of RAM. At the highest settings and 1080p resolution, the game ran at around 70 frames per second according to the FRAPS tool.

– iPhone and iPad Requirements for Fortnite:

If you want to play Fortnite on an iPhone, make sure your model is one of the following: SE, 6s, 6s Plus, 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus, or X. If you want to play Fortnite on an iPad, you need one of the following models: mini 4, Air 2, 2017, or Pro.

– Android Requirements for Fortnite:

Fortnite arrived on Android a while back, but you needed to sign up for the beta and be approved before getting access to the game. Note that Fortnite is bypassing the Google Play Store and is instead available as a download from the developer’s site. Make sure that any app download you initiate comes from a legitimate source, since this workaround exposes your device to potential vulnerabilities. – Xbox and PlayStation Requirements for Fortnite:

Any of the latest Xbox One consoles can run Fortnite, including the Xbox One X. However, there’s a catch. Since the game is currently in early access, Xbox players need an Xbox Live Gold subscription in order to play the Battle Royale mode.

All models of the PlayStation 4 can run Fortnite. You don’t need to be a PS Plus member to play the game, either. Recently, Sony announced cross-play support for Fortnite on the PS4, after significant player backlash against Sony’s initial refusal to offer this capability. The feature is now in open beta, so players can now use the same account across all platforms.

– Nintendo Switch Requirements for Fortnite:

Nintendo only makes one version of the Switch and Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode is one of the many Switch games you can download for the handheld console. Just head over to the Nintendo Game Store. Epic Games has no plans to launch the Save the World PvE mode on the platform.

2. Keep Watching the Match

If you’re just starting out with Fortnite, it’s useful to watch the rest of the match after you are eliminated. When you die, the game automatically switches to the perspective of whoever killed you. And when that player dies, it changes to the new killer’s view.

You can continue to hop between players up until the end of each match. It’s tempting to launch into a new match immediately after you die, but the more time you dedicate to learning how to play Fortnite correctly, the more time (in the long run) you will spend actually in-game.

Besides, if you leave a match early, especially any squad- or team-based modes, then there’s no way find out how your compadres fared. A bit of moral support can go a long way. Check out the map at any time for an overview of the match and to locate teammates.

One benefit of staying with a match is that it forces you to pause and review the circumstances that led to your death. If you notice a trend in how you die in Fortnite, it’s wise to change your strategy.

For example, I carelessly wandered into the open a few times, which made me an easy target for enemy players. You need to be overly cautious when moving between areas of cover, even if you feel like you are alone.

Also, if you see someone else land on top of or near a building, it’s worth looking for a new place to start foraging for materials and weapons. Avoid confrontation, unless absolutely necessary.

Another advantage to sticking around until the end is that you can see how increasingly skilled players play the game. While many players may in fact just move around aimlessly hoping to avoid detection, others actually employ useful strategies.

For example, after dying early on in one of my first matches, I realized the potential of Fortnite’s construction mechanic. The player I followed repeatedly built structures around himself both for protection and to gain a better vantage point. Other times, he used existing structures and buildings as the foundation for larger-scale fortresses.

This is a common strategy in team-based matches, as well; by the end of the game, the map is littered with impressive structures, some of which tower high into the sky.

3. Collect and Construct

Fortnite’s construction system is one of the game’s strongest aspects. Each player goes into battle with an ax (or similar tool) that he or she uses to chop down and collect objects. Most of the environment is destructible, and hacking down everything from houses to vehicles to trees and rocks is endlessly satisfying.

You don’t ever run out stamina while scavenging, which is great, as is the fact that the game automatically adds the material to your inventory once you break them down. It’s a very quick and effective system. Another small detail I appreciate is the sound design; you hear an increasingly higher-pitched tone with each ax swing as you get closer to destroying an object.

Objects break down into three main materials: wood, bricks, and metal. You have five slots for building objects, including a fence, square floor, pyramid, campfire, and stairs. You can construct items with any of the materials (with the exception of the campfire). Metal is the strongest material, followed by brick, and then wood.

Keep in mind that the stronger the material, the longer it takes to build. So, if you are in a tight spot and need immediate cover, building wooden barriers is your best bet. It’s surprisingly simple to construct a building or makeshift shelter.

Everything snaps together nicely, and it’s easy to customize individual components should you need to add a window or door. You can also break down or move barriers if you accidentally start building in the wrong location.

Construction is one of the keys to advancing far into a match. Foremost, you can build ramps and steps to access areas you couldn’t before. For example, if you see a weapon or health pack on top of a roof, this mechanic lets you reach it.

If you are under fire, you can immediately build a shelter and try to wait out the threat. During later parts of the match, you can create a lookout post and watch for enemy movements. In team modes, constructing is even more important.

If you are skilled enough to reach the center of the map with most of your team intact, building massive, protective shelters can greatly increase your chance of survival.

As with the rest of the environment, however, anything you construct can be destroyed by combatants with any sort of weapon. Take caution when another player fires a rocket or throws a grenade towards your base; either can cause everything to come tumbling down.

4. Find Multiple Weapons

Let’s face it, Fortnite’s shooting and combat mechanics are hit-or-miss. As in, it’s a matter of luck whether you hit or miss your target. That said, you are even less likely to survive a confrontation if you are unarmed.

So, your priority when you land should be to find at least one gun. You can fight off other players with your ax, but that only deals a small amount of damage.

I also recommend collecting as many guns as you can (your character has five item slots). First and foremost, it provides you with a range of attack options when you come across another player. A shotgun, for example, is much more effective in close quarters than a sniper rifle.

Further, since it is difficult to actually hit targets in the game, you are likely to run out of ammo quickly. Why find more bullets, when you can just as easily switch to another weapon? Also, if you pick up an extra gun and end up not using it, that’s still one less gun in the hands of your enemy.

Be sure to stay up to date with Fortnite’s latest developer updates. Sometimes, new weapons are added to the game, such as the new heavy shotgun. You don’t want to be caught off guard if another player fires an unfamiliar weapon in your direction, since any hesitation can result in your death.

The best way to get familiar with a new weapon is to use it. Pick up any new and menacing gear as you scavenge and test its power against unsuspecting trees and houses.

If you do manage to kill another player, be sure to pick up all the loot they drop. You shouldn’t hesitate to take a better weapon or a much-needed health pack.

However, if you deliberate too long on which items to collect, you become an easy target for anyone else in the area. And then the person who kills you gets double the loot. Don’t make it too easy for your enemies.

5. Keep an Eye on the Storm

As with PUBG, Fortnite’s pace is controlled by an ever-constricting play area. In Fortnite, you must remain within the eye of a storm; if you don’t, you take damage.

At set intervals, this area gets smaller and you need to do your best to stay within its boundaries. If you get caught behind the wall, it is difficult to get back inside, since the barrier moves very quickly. If you sprint from one fallen player to the next, continuously stealing their health packs, it’s possible to make it back, but I was not so lucky.

Each time I fell behind the pace, I was not able to recover, since I could not find any nearby resources. Another time, I found myself trapped at the bottom of a cavern and unable to advance in the direction of safety.

Although staying within the playable area is a priority, sometimes there’s some strategy in timing your entry. For example, if you are running for your life to reach the center of the storm, you become an easy target.

Other players can easily detect and eliminate you, especially if the storm itself knocks down your health levels. Instead, plan to arrive at the barrier as it closes or right beforehand. Once safely inside, you can take a position with a good vantage point and return the favor.

6. Don’t Look Down

Fall damage exists in Fortnite, so try to avoid falling from a great height (and don’t jump to your doom, either). The game doesn’t restrict the island boundaries, so you can fall off the side if you aren’t careful. I had to test this at least once, and indeed, the game let me run off the side of a cliff. If you must, feel free to confirm this independently.

In any case, the structures you create probably pose a much greater threat, since you can ascend to dizzying heights in no time at all. It’s all fun and games until you accidentally walk off the edge. I died at least twice by trying to walk up a set of stairs before I had finished building them.

Also, other players can destroy any part of your structures, which can expose you to incoming fire or cause you to just drop out of the sky. Always make sure to reinforce shelters or at least have an exit strategy should your foundation fall out from under you.

Getting knocked out (either by another player or by being outside the eye of the storm) will also likely lead to death. You fall to your knees and can only slowly move by crawling. You can’t use your weapons or construct a barrier.

By pure luck, I evaded an armed enemy who had just knocked me out by crawling underneath the stairs. Thankfully, a teammate came in and eliminated my tormentor before he found my hiding place. Still, I wouldn’t take that chance again.

7. Master Mobile Controls

Fortnite’s beta is now available on iOS and Android. As with any mobile port, Epic Games made some concessions for the sake of performance and the form factor, some of which affect gameplay.

For example, it’s more difficult to control your character without a keyboard or controller. The touch controls work fine, but more advanced mechanics like constructing can feel tedious. At the very least, make sure to actually read the tutorial screens, so you aren’t left fumbling with the controls at critical moments.

Also, Fortnite’s mobile version doesn’t translate well to a smaller screen size. Despite the more pixel-dense resolutions of phones and tablets, textures look dull and objects clearly lack detail.

Adjusting the graphics presets in the options menu helps only somewhat. The other problem with a smaller screen size is that in-game menus are much more difficult to read and navigate.

8. Find a Vehicle

In keeping with its off-kilter, creative theme, Fortnite’s vehicles are similarly outlandish. Take, for example, the first vehicle Epic Games added to the game, the trusty shopping cart. This masterful metallic contraption comfortably sits two people; one in control of movement and the other in charge of protection.

The shopping carts aren’t invincible, though. If you hit a landing too hard, that’s the end of your joy ride. Enemy players can also shoot you down as you glide past.

Fortnite also recently deployed All Terrain Karts (ATKs) across the map. These larger vehicles seat up to four players, so your entire squad can travel as a group. You still need to stay vigilant, though, as the ATK’s minimal body frame leaves you exposed to enemy combatants. Like most other in-game objects, ATKs are destructible; an ax or gunfire can make quick work of these vehicles.

But there are plenty of good reasons to risk getting behind the wheel. Both the shopping cart and the ATX are faster (and more fun) than sprinting to a destination. This increased traveling speed can come in handy whenever you need to escape danger, overtake the pace of the closing storm, or travel quickly between locales to collect resources between stages.

9. Group Up With Teammates

Like most multiplayer games, Fortnite is more fun with friends or teammates. It’s difficult to stay motivated going up against 99 other players each play session, as you will likely die early and often. You should sample one of Fortnite’s other multiplayer modes instead, such as duo or squads.

In the Duo mode, the game pairs you with another random player or you can add a friend. The Squads mode supports up to four players in each group. Fortnite also gives you the option to group up with other random players, but of course, good teammates are hard to find.

Also, check out the 50 vs. 50 game type or whatever other modes Fortnite introduces, such as Teams of 20. In these massive team-based skirmishes, your first goal should be to find other people on your team.

The more people you have watching your back, the better your chances of survival. Make sure any group you approach is actually on your side; running headfirst into a swarm of enemies is a quick path to death.

Building in team-based modes is also more chaotic, since you and your comrades can build sprawling protective shelters in no time at all. A large group of players can quickly break down and collect resources from even the most massive in-game structures.

Before your crew concocts a sure-fire victory strategy, make sure all of your teammates’ devices are cross-play compatible.

10. Take a Break With Playground Mode

Fortnite’s new Playground mode lets you and your friends roam Fortnite’s map without having to worry about rival players. As part of many of its updates, Fortnite adds new locales to explore.

For example, you can now visit the relaxing Lazy Links golf course, ancient Viking Outpost, and expanded Dirt Race Track. This sandbox game mode is also a great opportunity to acquaint yourself with the recently added vehicles.

That’s not all this mode offers, though. Players can also search for and test out new weapons, experiment with construction strategies, and stake out the best starting places for each round.

The options really are endless here and the freedom opens up a ton of creative options for Twitch streamers, for better or worse. Don’t stray for too long, though, especially if you are on your own, as the map can feel lonely and lifeless without other players.

If nothing else, Fortnite is a graphically compelling game with a vibrant color palette and insanely varied landscapes and landmarks. With that in mind, you could treat Playground mode as a walking simulator or wallpaper generator game if you are so inclined. Don’t expect to get results as picturesque as you would with No Man’s Sky, especially with its No Man’s Sky Next update.

11. Don’t Waste Your Money

Fortnite unapologetically embraces the best and worst aspects of free-to-play games. On one hand, Epic Games does not charge you to play Fortnite, the single most-viewed game on Twitch.

It’s free to upgrade your character’s skills or abilities; paid items are purely cosmetic. How far you advance in a match largely depends on your luck, and to a lesser extent, your skills.

The flip side of the free-to-play equation is the presence of microtransactions. Although many gamers rightfully criticized titles such as Star Wars Battlefront II’s launch for its reckless pay mechanics, free-to-play games with purchasable items tend to cause less uproar. I still hate the idea of microtransactions regardless of how much I paid for the game.

Fortnite’s V-Bucks currency system doesn’t help matters either, since its pay tiers are organized so that you almost always pay for more credits than you need for any one item. I maintain that spending actual money on digital cosmetics in a free game seems absurd. But then again, I’m not Fortnite’s target audience.

I recommend that you really stop and think about your decision before you put down any cash. Also, know that whatever outfit or item you purchase in Fortnite will not magically transform you into a better player. Instead, you will just look more ridiculous when you exit a round early. And whenever the Fortnite fad ends, you won’t get back any of that money you spent on such frivolities.

Parents, it should go without saying that hiring a Fortnite coach for your child is a waste of money. I honestly didn’t think I could be surprised any more by ridiculous Fortnite news, but here we are. I fully expect to see a live-action Netflix series before the year is over.

12. Know When to Quit

After a particularly early exit from a match, you may be tempted to just quit and never come back to the game. Don’t ignore your instincts. If you don’t really care about Fortnite all that much, I fully encourage you to find something else to occupy your time. There’s no sense in continuing to play a game you don’t enjoy just because it’s popular.

Read a book instead or go outside and exercise. Fitness trackers can recognize all sorts of physical activities, including biking, running, swimming, and walking. Although it’s important not to get unhealthily obsessed, you should also check out devices that encourage competition with friends.

For those who remain steadfast in their goals to obtain a Fortnite victory, the only way to improve your chances is to play consistently. The more matches you join, the more likely you are to develop a coherent strategy and outrank opponents. After all, as the game matures and the growth of the player base slows, the players you encounter will also likely improve over time.

Still, even hundreds of hours of playtime, incredible luck, and a battle-tested strategy don’t guarantee a victory. You may need to spend significantly more time than you originally anticipated with the game, waiting for the perfect opportunity.

If playing Fortnite ever becomes tedious, take a break. Unless you plan to play video games professionally or compete at some level, games should be a source of entertainment, not a daily commitment.

II. How to win at Fortnite

1. Three easy strategies for winning a game of Fortnite

To win consistently in Fortnite, eventually you’ll have to get good at building. Winners build above their opponents, secure the high ground, and score headshots, which deal greater damage. To get better at building, you need to practice, even if it means losing a bunch of games in a row just to develop the muscle memory of placing walls and ramps.

But what if you’re bad at building and want to win now? It’s hard, but it’s not impossible. Here are three easy strategies for new players who want to win their first Victory Royale without building too much.

– Strategy #1: Play it safe for as long as possible

You won’t win any medals for bravery playing this way, but one way to last until the final circles is by playing extremely cautiously. Simply avoiding enemies isn’t enough—you’ll also want to hug the outside of each circle, potentially even dipping into the storm to avoid fights if you have medkits on hand.

Don’t do anything to draw attention to yourself; don’t shoot unless you’re sure you can make the kill, and be cognizant of leaving a trail of man-made structures or open doors behind you.

Once you’re in one of the final circles, find a hiding spot and get good at crouching. Enemies can hear your footsteps and your weapon switches, so keep movement to a minimum. Shift spots only when you have to, and if you need to run to avoid the storm, try to do it while opponents are fighting each other to muffle the sound of your footsteps.

You will eventually have to kill your last opponent, or, if you’ve maneuvered yourself into a position where it’s difficult to be shot, you’ll have to outlast your opponent in the storm.

You can lengthen the amount of time you last after the storm moves in with meds and with fireplaces, but there’s a good chance that your opponent will rush and shoot you before they die of natural causes.

For this final battle, make sure you pick up a shotgun at some point during the game, and prepare for close-quarters combat. Try jumping and aiming for the head.

– Strategy #2: Disorient your opponents by destroying their structures

The point of this strategy is to keep your enemies flustered and perpetually on the defensive, which will make it a lot harder for them to take you out without building at their level. For this strategy, you’ll need to play aggressively. After your initial looting, actively engage with enemies so that you can cycle your way through better loot.

Try to gather a loadout that includes some form of explosives, a medium-range weapon (like an assault rifle), a shotgun, and a ton of ammo. Use the explosives and assault rifle in the endgame to take out the bottoms of enemies’ towers—dropping them to the ground—and then rush them with the shotgun.

When enemies build up against you, don’t stop shooting their structures down. Try at all costs to keep enemies on your level or below, and don’t give them time to heal or reshield.

– Strategy #3: Leech onto the best player in the game

If you thought strategy #1 was borderline cowardly, you’ll love strategy #3. It requires a rudimentary knowledge of building and a deep willingness to stand perfectly still for minutes at a time.

Follow strategy #1 until the endgame, and then identify the enemy with the best position in the game. They’ll likely have the high ground, have a sniper rifle or rocket launcher, and should be picking off the last few players one by one.

Find a way to sneak into the same space as this enemy without being noticed—again, move during firefights if you can. Ideally, they are sitting atop a tower, in which case you try to move into a bottom floor of their structure, building new walls and ramps to conceal yourself if necessary.

If they’re in a building, move onto the floor directly below them, adding a ramp above yourself so you aren’t directly in their field of vision if they blow out your roof.

Once you’re under your target, sit tight and wait for them to shoot out the rest of the players. When it finally comes down to just the two of you, don’t give them too much time to search around for your hiding spot.

You don’t want to let them find you first. Instead, right after they take out the third-place enemy, move under their footsteps and blow out the floor they’re standing on. Switch to shotgun and try to blast them as they fall.

This strategy relies on a lot of specific contingencies, but carrying you through to this stage of the game dramatically raises your chance of winning. Just try to get good at close-quarters headshots.

The gist of “Fortnite Battle Royale” is simple: 100 players are dropped onto an island with a constantly-shrinking “safe zone.” There are weapons and special items scattered all over the island.

The goal is to be the last person standing at the end. “Fortnite Battle Royale” may seem straightforward, but it’s actually a very nuanced game with plenty of depth. And knowledge, in addition to fast reflexes, is crucial to surviving and winning the 100-person battle royale.

• 2.1 Take advantage of the training area before the game starts

Before every game, all of the players are loaded into a lobby of sorts, where you’ll be able to pick up a few weapons and materials to practice shooting and building, respectively. If you’re feeling unsure about controls, use this time to get familiar.

• 2.2 Use your pickaxe on everything you can, especially at the start of each game.

Every character in “Fortnite Battle Royale” carries an indestructible pickaxe, and almost every object in the game can be destroyed with your pickaxe. Just hit it repeatedly to gather its materials — wood, metal, or brick — which you’ll use to build forts, ramps, walls, and defenses.

Gathering materials early on is the key to a good defense in “Fortnite Battle Royale.” The best players break everything apart from the very start of the game, from trees to boxes and even walls and floors.

– Snipers are perfect for taking out enemies from long distance, but terrible for close combat.

– Shotguns are perfect for when enemies are close, but you need to be aggressive when using it. (Try jumping while pushing forward on an enemy to be a moving target.)

– Assault rifles are great at long distances, but can be used up close as well when necessary. Some have scopes; others don’t.

– Submachine guns fire really quickly, but are bad at long distance.

– Pistols are good at medium range, but may fire too slowly for close-combat situations.

– Rocket launchers and grenade launchers are great for destroying enemy forts and buildings in a shot or two — and usually your opponents along with them.

– The Crossbow has unlimited shots. But it’s a crossbow. So there’s that.

• 2.6 Learn each tool, and know when to use it.

Fortnite Battle Royale has several tools that can be used both offensively and defensively:

– The Grenade blows up a few seconds after you throw it at someone.

– Throwing a Boogie Bomb forces opponents caught in its wake to dance for a few seconds, making them vulnerable to your attack.

– Throwing the Port-A-Fort grenade will instantly create a fort for you. It can be used defensively, but also offensively, as demonstrated here by Twitch streamer Ninja.

– Anything caught in the wake of an Impulse Grenade will be blown away, or up into the air, depending on the angle of your throw. You can also use impulse grenades to launch yourself at enemy players to cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time.

2.7 If you’re still getting used to the game’s controls, practice shooting and building first when you know you’re totally safe and alone <em>before</em> you do try doing these things in an actual firefight.

2.8 Engage in firefights early and often. Sometimes the best way to learn the controls is to dive right in — and usually, players are most vulnerable at the very start of the game, so that’s your best chance to be aggressive and actually win.

2.9 If you hear guys running away from you, that means they don’t have good weapons, or they’re weak. Go after them.

2.10 Pay attention to the rarity of each item. Usually, you’ll want to hold onto the better, rarer item, but there are exceptions.

Sometimes you need to think about what you need at that particular moment. If you’re low on health for instance, and it’s between getting a cool-looking rare weapon, or a Med Kit or Shield Potion, it would be wise to consume or keep the health items first before considering the weapon.

Also, some less-rare items are actually preferable. The blue-tier pump shotgun, for instance, deals some of the highest damage in the game, and is usually worth holding onto.

• 2.11 Know the areas.

There are 18 areas in “Fortnite Battle Royale.”

Their names are Anarchy Acres, Dusty Depot, Fatal Fields, Flush Factory, Greasy Grove, Haunted Hills, Junk Junction, Lonely Lodge, Loot Lake, Moisty Mire, Pleasant Park, Retail Row, Salty Springs, Shifty Shafts, Snobby Shores, Tilted Towers, Tomato Town, Wailing Woods. Since the safe zone of the map continually shrinks throughout the game, get familiar with the areas that are towards the center of the map: Those areas, like Tilted Towers, have the best chance of being in the safe zone through most of the match.

• 2.12 Know the right time to engage, and when to retreat.

You see two players fighting each other up ahead. What do you do?

– If you have good weapons with enough ammo, and you have plenty of health and shields, you could take them both by surprise and win.

– If you don’t have good weapons, or you’re low on health and/or shields, consider gathering more materials first and healing up before getting into a fight.

Consider your own health and weapons before trying to start a fight. You might not be the one who ends it.

• 2.13 Use the new Replay system to study how you died, and learn how to do better the next time.

Early in one game, I had collected some nice weapons and headed up a flight of stairs, when suddenly, I died. My game ended. Using the new Replay system in “Fortnite Battle Royale” — accessed by going to the Settings tab in the main menu — I was quickly able to learn from my mistake.

Someone had laid a trap on the ceiling in the building I was in, and I neglected my surroundings. The game will automatically save your games, so use that to your advantage. Study the tapes.

• 2.14 Watch the pros, and emulate what they do.

Go to Twitch or YouTube, and watch streamers like Ninja or DrLupo do their work. In order to unlock the Fortnite She-Hulk skin, players will have to complete a set of ‘Awakening’ Challenges, which have been revealed. The Challenges are as follows:

Jennifer Walters/ She-Hulk Fortnite Awakening Challenges

The She-Hulk skin can be bought via the Season 4 Battle Pass for 950 V-Bucks. Once you purchase the Battle Pass, you will have to reach Level 29, to be able to unlock the She-Hulk variation.

However, to actually channel your inner rage and turn into the She-Hulk, you will also have to first unlock the ‘Gamma Overload’ Emote.

To do this, you need to complete the set of 3 Awakening Challenges.

#1 Visit Jennifer Walters Office: Jennifer Walters Office is a legal building located on the western side of Retail Row, opposite to the large yellow house. Once you find it, your first Jennifer Walters challenge will be completed.

#2 Eliminate Doctor Doom’s Henchmen as Jennifer Walters: To eliminate Dr Doom’s henchmen, you need to land at Pleasant Park/ Doom’s Domain. The easiest way to find them is by visiting the Doom House, towards the north of the POI. Once that is completed, you can tick the second Jennifer Walters challenge off your list.

#3 Emote as Jennifer Walters after smashing Vases: To smash vases and emote as Jennifer Walters, you need to head over to Camp Cod, situated at the bottom right corner of the Fortnite map. In the middle of the shooting range, there will be a pot or a vase that you need to smash. Once that is done, click on the emote button and get ready to Hulk out as the She-Hulk!

In addition to the She-Hulk emote, there are also Scales of Justice Back Bling and Hammers of Justice Pickaxe available in the Fortnite Battle Pass set.
